EPISODE 5 "FROM THE PAST"
BETH (voiceover): "Everything was spinning, but at the same time I felt him so close, so mine ... at that very moment, it seemed that he was with me. My skin was still permeated with the smell of him, so personal, so male, and my lips still retained its special flavor, sweet and bitter. I need so have him, see him, feel his arms around my body again and hear his velvet voice against my ear, telling me. "I love you...I want you " Making me shake with the cold, soft touch of his lips, caressing my neck while I surrender to the passion of his kisses. Tender, deep kisses, which made me feel a part of him and made him mine. Oh Mick! I love you and I love you forever. I will not resign myself to lose you even if it means getting lost between your world and mine".
Then suddenly another voice ... so different from the one I dreamed, pulled out me completely from my dream.
Then suddenly another voice ... so different from the one I dreamed, pulled out me completely from my dream.
“Beth, Beth! Are you there? Come on, open the door please! It’s Ben, Ben Talbot.”
But when Beth was finally able to react and managed to get up, it was already too late. The door opened abruptly with a thud and Talbot, accompanied by two armed men, broke into the apartment.
T: “Thank God!” The young prosecutor exclaimed with relief while he walked toward the beautiful girl. “Okay, it was just a false alarm” He said in his phone.
Beth: What's the matter? What is all this?" She asked, still a bit confused by what was going on.
T: “I've been calling you all morning, but I didn´t get an answer. We received a strange call that came from this building and...well, I was worried about you, you know, lately there´s not a day that goes by that someone isn’t trying to kill you.”
B: "Kill me? Aren’t you being a little paranoid? I remember that only happened a few times and I assure you it now has nothing to do with a murder attempt, at least not directly. It is about..." Her head was still spinning, she felt confused and weak and she tried to stand up holding on to the first thing that she found. “I’ve been neglecting myself for the past few days. I haven’t been eating enough, and well..." She moaned softly remembering certain moments with Mick, but she had to be careful. Talbot was watching her closely. "Well ... you know, I guess the exhaustion overtook me and I fainted, but don´t worry, I´m fine now.” She said, finally able to stand up. "I’m really sorry that you went through all that trouble for nothing.” After glancing at her watch she said. “Oh my God! I didn’t think I was out that long! I must have fallen asleep.
T: "Are you sure? Actually you look very pale, maybe you should see a doctor, it might be better if I go with you." The prosecutor was quick to say while he observed the emaciated look of the young woman.
B: "No, it’s not really necessary. I assure you I am already feeling better." She said a little uncomfortable by the attitude of her boss.
T: "I insist. You're my partner and care a lot about you and I don´t want to risk losing you." He said with a smile that surprised Beth.
B: "Wow! You’re so kind!" She exclaimed as he returned a forced grin. “Okay ... give me a few minutes if you don’t mind, I have to go first to...you know... I have to go get dressed, okay?”
T: "Okay, I´m going to wait outside." He said, realizing Beth’s discomfort.
While she was making the bed, a fleeting memory crossed her mind, the time Mick took her for the first time. That magical night when they both belonged to each other, and were united forever, in body and soul. She knew she could never love anyone as she loved him and never would she love with the same intensity. Fate had made her fall in love with a vampire and he loved her. It was a complicated and dangerous love as he always told her, but not impossible. She would get it even if it was impossible one way or another.
Looking in the mirror, she realized that Talbot was right, her face was really pale, haggard and absolutely emaciated. She still felt very weak and had difficulty even standing by herself. Everything was spinning around her and she felt the need to cling to the bathroom sink a few moments to avoid running the risk of falling again. It was a strange sense of vertigo, similar to that day in the desert when Mick drank her blood. But now she didn’t know what could be the cause. Mick had been very careful in their sexual encounters, they barely had time to enjoy the pleasure of their passion with everything that happened and when at last they had done so, he had always kept the beast under control when he was making love with her so much so that even in moments of uncontrolled passion, he always tried to take as little as possible to cause the least damage. He always took care of her, he always maintained control despite the desire, always struggling to avoid hurting her because he was aware of her mortality. But now, what was happening with her?

While in the old house, outside
Coraline was preparing to apply the serum that Cynthia, her faithful friend, had prepared, to the open wound on her arm.
Cynthia: “Really do you think this is worth it?”
Coraline: “Yes, it is. I just want him to be safe and he won’t be with her.”
Cynthia: “Safe or with you? Anyway I think the price is too high Coraline. I cannot stand by and watch while you are dying slowly. Please, let me try! Perhaps we still have time.”
Coraline: "No Cynthia, I prefer that things stay just the way they are." She told her giving her a comforting gaze. Anyway, I don’t care what happens because I will be there for him always no matter what he wants. I’m a woman... his woman.” She said as she stroked the strange pendant, which was resting on her breast.
Cynthia: “Really? For how long, Coraline? You cannot keep him hypnotized forever. Sooner or later Mick will realize that you lied, and then you'll lose him again. Don’t you realize that this makes no sense? Don´t kid yourself, all this will end and for nothing, don´t you see? Coraline please, forget this and let's get out of here!” Cynthia begged while she was shaking the body of her friend with the desperate intention of making her react. But Coraline was still with her eyes fixed on the silver pendant, the key to her dreams, lost in her thoughts while she continued to spin it between her fingers.

In a restaurant near the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center
T: “How strange! Did you have problems with anemia before?”
B: Well ... the truth is I don’t know." She said as she lowered her eyes and stirred the orange juice with a straw. "You know, women have inevitable losses ... and I told you that I hadn’t been eating right lately.”
T: "Yeah ... sure, I guess you're right." He said as a slight blush appeared on his cheeks. "Well ... are you better now?" He asked with a concerned tune.
B: "Yes, of course." She replied. "I feel like a vampire that has just been fed. She smiled slightly. Talbot looked at her strangely and she realized it at this moment what she’d said. “Oh! That was a joke ... I mean ... it´s the almost raw beef that I've had to eat. Let’s not talk about it. Tell me what was so important that you wanted to say to me yesterday? When you called me that evening before the fire, you seemed very impatient. Is it about a new case maybe?” She asked while preparing to take another sip of the orange juice, supporting the straw with her lips.
T: “No ... it turned out to be a misunderstanding, a minor accident.” He said looking away and then, abruptly, changing the subject, He asked. “By the way, it´s strange that we haven’t already met with St John, he seems to always be following you closely, and, well, today he has not even called you.”
B: “Really?” She said on purpose to place a barrier between him and her most intimate world. Anything to do with Mick was her business only.-"He's a private detective, don’t you remember? And he has pending cases to be resolved.” She said looking down and avoiding the subject while Talbot made a gesture of apparent disgust. "By the way ... Can I ask you a direct question?” She said at the same time she was playing with the straw.
T: “Yes ... of course ... shoot." He replied while finishing his dessert.
B: “What have you got against Mick?” He looked at her a little surprised and tried to deny the obvious. “Oh, come on! Even a blind man can see you don´t like him.”
T: “Well ...” He replied reluctantly while he left the teaspoon in one side of the bowl. "I don’t think he´s what he seems to be." He said staring at her beautiful blue eyes.
B: “And just what does he seem to be?” She asked, staring back at him.
T: “I do not know ... maybe a nice man?”
B: “He’s a good person.” She stated outright as if she felt offended. I do not know why you have doubts about that.”
T: “Really? I think this guy has many things to hide. When I took Josh’s place, I was informed about the above cases, and curiously, the majority, in which Saint John had intervened, the culprit never was found and all evidences disappeared mysteriously. For an example the case of that drug... black crystal, I think it was called.
The fact is that the person who was responsible was someone called "Lola" or something like that. She was never found, neither dead nor alive and all the evidence, including the laboratory which manufactured the drug in question ended up in flames, from a gas leak if I remember correctly. Not to mention the Tejada case, the mafia was involved in the death of former prosecutor, who by the way was your boyfriend, right?”
B: “Josh? Yes ... it´s truth ... he was my boyfriend.” She looked down again a few seconds to remember. “What happened to Tejada?" She asked. "I thought that he had ended up being a victim of his own gang from a fight?”
T: “Really? Well, my reports about that are quite different, maybe there was a settling of scores, but not the kind you think.”
B: “What do you mean?”
T: “Did you know that St John was responsible for the interrogation of Bustos, one of the thugs who kidnapped Lindsey? LT. Carl told me that the guy was terrified when St John left the interview room, he seemed beside himself, and screaming incoherently, or something like ‘The devil, the devil, help me, he is the devil.’ And your friend gave a false address to the police where they could find Tejada. When the police finally got to his hideout, the place was completely destroyed. There was blood everywhere, but no sign of Tejada. The only witness told the police he found the place destroyed. The only thing he kept repeating was that the devil had come to get him and had taken him to hell. Those were his last words before entering a catatonic state. He was locked into a center for the mentally ill and he has not said a word since then.”
Beth gave him a puzzled look while the piece of ice cream she’d just placed in her mouth began to melt.

Meanwhile ......
Coraline slowly approached the freezer where Mick was resting. In her hands was hidden a little secret.
C: "I'm sorry my love, maybe you don´t understand now, but it´s better you don’t.” She whispered as she prepared to inject him with a strange red substance with a silver flash. However, when the liquid was about to enter the veins of the young man, who lay asleep, she felt a sudden force on her arm, preventing her to continue.
Mick: "No, thanks. I think I've slept enough." He growled with a deep voice.
C: "Mick!" Coraline exclaimed fearful looking into the icy eyes of vampire.
M: "Sorry to stop your little game, but I think you´ve had enough fun.” He said coolly while he snatched the syringe from her hand and looked at its contents.
C: "No! It´s not what you think!" She said as she struggled to recover what he had taken from her. "You do not understand ...!"
M: “Oh yeah, believe me, I understand. You're the one who seems to have trouble understanding that I'm not your toy!” He cried while he was holding up the syringe in front of her eyes. "Coraline it´s over!" He shouted, throwing it against the wall with all his might causing the syringe too burst into pieces, sending its brilliant content, splashing all over the wall and floor.
C: “What are you doing?”
M:" What do you think?" He said as he finished buttoning his shirt. "I´m going to leave this hell hole right now. You can have fun all you want!" He said glancing around him. "But you can count me out!"
C: "No, you cannot go!" She said facing him.
M: “Really? And how are you going to stop me? Tell me! What trick are you going to use this time? Come on, tell me!" He said in a rage. "Oh, I know, you´ll send other killers that you’ll hire like you did last night...Is that? Or maybe you are going to use another of your potions to make me forget and fall back at your feet?" He asked sarcastically as he made a gesture of reverence.
C: “How dare you?” She approached him angrily as she lifted her hand against him. But he was faster and managed to stop her before she could unload on him, the imposing proximity of his body forced her to go back against the wall. Once there, he cornered her with one of his strong arms placing his other hand on her neck to prevent her from moving. But she, was far from being frightened, nor would she surrender to his strength, and looked at him proud.
M: “I should kill you right here.” He said with a deep voice, looking at her with his icy gaze, but she stood defiant in front of him. Her eyes searched his mouth, her gaze was full of desire, she inhaled his scent and put her lips on his.
C: “Do it if you want, because I will not let you go while I have a single breath of life left.” She said as she twirled her fingers around the strange pendant around her neck.
In that closeness, Mick smelt a familiar scent, far different from the smell coming from a vampire. Something at that moment made him feel confused. It couldn’t be true, that smell was the scent of Beth. Coraline was aware of the confusion that she was causing him and she smiled with satisfaction to see that she was fulfilling her purpose.
M: “Why are you doing this?” He asked with a softer tone while their lips were just inches apart. The smell coming out of the pendant, caught him, forced him to stay there, as if she had suddenly become the woman who he really loved, the owner of that scent and of himself.
C: “Because I love you ... Mick ... and I want to protect you.” She answered insinuating, letting him feel her breath, now so warm while it brushed his face.
M: “Protect me…from what?” He asked again while still staring at her completely confused.
C: “From yourself.”

At the restaurant ...
B: “Devil? ... Don’t tell me you believe in those witch tales? Frankly I believed that your intelligence was above those stupid superstitions, Ben. Tejada had many enemies, the place was completely destroyed, it is clear to me that it was a fight between two gangs. Actually, I don´t see what Mick has to do with any of that.”
T: “I don’t really believe in witch tales, but some witnesses who were in the area, just before ‘the devil’ too Tejada to hell, were asked about it. They reported seeing someone there whose description resembled that of your friend.”
B: “Are you saying that Mick had time to go to the other side of town, destroy that bar by himself, kill Tejada and make him disappear and that none of his thugs could stop him? Oh come on Ben! That’s just absurd conjectures and you know it. Where is the evidences? Mick has sent to prison to many criminals, it is not surprising that some of them try to involve him in something dark for revenging but I know him and I can tell you that it is impossible. Something like this happened once before with LG, that man hid behind the mask of false innocence and tried to blame Mick and finally we discovered that he was just a twisted psychopath.”
T: “Yes, a psychopath and you killed him to save St Johns life. Tell me something." He said putting his face closer to hers. "Why do you defend him so much?”
B: “Mick has saved my life too many times, more than I can count. I have seen how he has saved the lives of many others, endangering his own. He even saved your life, have you have forgotten that? You witnessed yourself how he saved the life of the daughter of Kent Morrow after her attempted suicide. Anyway, I know him enough to believe in him.”
T: “No Beth, you're wrong about that. You believe knowing him makes a difference, but tell me what do you know about his past, his family, people he grew up with? Where did he study? If he has always lived in LA, how come there is nothing about his past? That man has gone to a lot of trouble to delete any clues about his life, doesn’t that seem strange to you?”
B: "No, I don’t think so. Mick is a private investigator, remember? I don´t think it’s wise for his personal information to be available and anyway, all of us have secrets about which we don´t like to talk about because sometimes they are bad memories that hurt us". Talbot looked down for a moment as if he could not continue looking into her eyes "But that doesn´t turn us into bad people or into murderers. Privacy is something you should learn to respect, Ben."
And at that moment she decided to vary the conversation. "Talking about the past.” She said in a casual tone, glancing at her boss as she took a spoonful of her favorite ice cream. "I must confess that I am at some disadvantage with you."
T: “Really and ... Why if I may ask you." Said the young prosecutor relaxing the furrow of his brow while he looked at her with an air of complacency.
B: “Well, you know, I guess you've researched the smallest detail of my life, so I no longer have any secrets from you.”
T: “The truth is that I like to know people who work with me, I don´t like unpleasant surprises. You know, my job is to know people.”
B: “Yeah ... and… can I ask you just what is it exactly that you know about me?”
T: “Well....” He hesitated as he adjusted his tie carefully. "I know you had to gone through a hard time when you were just a girl. First the inevitable death of your father, then the kidnapping. I guess it’s been very hard for you.”
Memory of her ailing father had been hidden in her mind for so long. He became ill when she was three years old, he grew weaker until he was but a shadow of himself. Sometimes she came to hate him for not being there, for being unable to prevent her kidnapping, allowing the fear and insecurity to reach her soul and for leaving her alone. But then, Mick appeared. He was her hero, her knight, her savior, the first figure that replaced the man who she had lost, the angel who took care of her for years, hidden in the shadows of anonymity such as the true heroes of many stories. And then he reappeared again, and become her prince charming, the man she had always dreamed of, her one true love. But now he too was gone, it was as if fate had determined that she be left alone forever, snatching from her hands all that she loved. An inevitable sense of fear swept over her. When she lost his father, it was a horrible thing that marked her. And, even at the risk of sounding superstitious, she could not help thinking that if Mick had disappeared, it would be an omen that danger lurked near her again. Finally she emerged from her brief reverie and replied to him.
B: “Yeah ... I guess sometimes life teaches you to grow up fast and choose strange ways of doing so." Then there was a brief silence and she looking into his eyes. "But I know virtually nothing about you and it makes me very suspicious." Beth forced a knowing smile to gain the trust of her boss.
T: “I can’t believe you haven’t been curious enough to investigate me on Google. Anyway, I have nothing to hide, so tell me, what do you want to know about me?
B: “Well, yeah, I admit that I have researched your professional career, you know, I don’t like working for someone I know nothing about. But ... I was thinking of something more personal ... You know, I just realized that I don’t know anything about your background, or your family for example. Do you have siblings?
Suddenly, the prosecutor´s face clouded
T: “Yes ... I had a sister, Anne ... but ... she disappeared many years ago.”
B: Wow! I'm sorry, I shouldn’t...”
T: "No, it´s ok, it's not your fault, it's just that ... Well is not something I like to remember, that's it all". He replied coldly, but there was sadness in the tone of his voice.
B: “Do you realize? That's what I meant earlier when...” But when she looked at his face, she realized he wasn’t listening, he had a lost gaze, there was something strange in his eyes, it was not pain, it was guilt. His cell phone rang. Talbot took the call right away, and when he looked at the screen of his cell phone his expression changed completely. Suddenly he became nervous, anxious...
T: “Yes ... I guess we have all suffered painful losses ..." He looked at his watch. "Sorry, anyway, I'm afraid it´s late". He said that rising abruptly. "I think you should take the afternoon off and ... relax. You need to recover ... I´ll take you home, ok?”
B: "Oh no, don´t worry, I have some things to do. Is there something wrong...?" She asked surprised to see his reaction.
T: “No, it's ok... I have to go, you know, it´s ... something urgent ... See you tomorrow at the office, right?”
B: “Right.” Beth watched him go while she wondered. ‘Something has made him nervous, but what? Maybe it has to do with the photo of the little girl that I found in his office.’ Talbot certainly had become a mystery for her and that aroused her curiosity, so she decided to visit her friend Sam to see what she could find out about his past.
B: “Devil?

MICK (voiceover): "With an ex-wife like mine, it´s very difficult to leave the past behind, she always brings it back ... but this time everything felt different, or maybe I was different? Coraline was an old vampire , beautiful and captivating. She belonged to a select lineage, a lineage that had more knowledge and power than the rest of the vampires, but still, despite the temptation, in spite of all her deceit, nothing was going to make it like it was before between her and me. It was no longer possible.
She was going to kiss him and it was enough that when her lips touched his, he realized that she was not the woman who he had wanted to see. No, she was not and would not ever be Beth, even if she used every trick of the book. Then, instinctively he grabbed her hands and turned away from her.
C: "Please Mick, you don´t understand. The love you feel for her, it will eventually destroy you and all of us! Please... You must believe me". She cried
M: "That's ridiculous!" He replied turning his back to her.
C: “Mick!” She called clinging to his back as he turned away from her. “Come back to me and I promise that everything will be different between us!”
Her voice sounded so sensual as in the past, but this time everything was different for him, in his mind and his heart there was no longer any room for Coraline.
M: “No! I cannot Coraline and I don´t want to.” He said as his last moments with Beth came into his memory and he closed his eyes as if he could still feel the warm, soft contact of her skin. There was nothing to think about, no more games, no more tricks. Then he turned against his ex-wife and took her by the arms and demanded."Coraline stop it! You have to let me go just as I did with you!"
C: "Okay, if you won’t do it for me, than do it for her!" Coraline's tone was a mixture of anger and despair.
Hearing that, the young man's expression changed completely, became fierce, threatening, tough...
MICK (voiceover): "An unusual fury arose in me and I felt the vampire awakening inside of me, ready to fight. For the first time, I looked onto her eyes and I felt a mixture of hatred and contempt for her. I would not let her hurt Beth ... Never!"
M: “No, Coraline. Don´t you go near her, don´t you dare hurt her because if you do I’ll destroy you and believe me, this time I will make sure not to leave you alive!" He warned her with a terrible gaze .
Josef: “Ahem, ahem ...Are you remembering old times maybe? Or simply are you arguing different points of view?”
M: "Joseph, this is none of your business". Mick said hoarsely never taking his eyes off Coraline.
J: "I'm afraid it´s so, brother."

The old vampire said in a serene tone while he put one hand on the shoulder of his friend to try to calm him. "I hate to say this, but Coraline is right,Mick. If you go back with Beth all of us will be dead, including Beth.” Mick turned to his friend with a mixture of anger and mistrust. "Come on, you can have fun later." Josef said with an ironic tone as he looked at Coraline like she was a naughty girl. "We have to talk, I have many things to tell you.”
MICK (voiceover): "Almost always, what you dream, love or want is irrelevant to the rest of the world, but sometimes what you love, dream or want, becomes the only thing that matters, by the magic of fate".
...........................................................................................................
BETH (voiceover): It is useless to close our eyes to the pain trying to escape the past. There is no corner of oblivion where you will be safe, because its shadow reached you sometime and the truth will be out, want it or not.
Upon arriving at BuzzWire nostalgia washed over her. It was inevitable the memory of Maureen and those times when BuzzWire was for her a dream come true. Many changes had taken place in her life since she met Mick, and many more changes still needed to be done so they could be together some day. It was lunchtime, and the office was practically deserted, Sam, her friend, had made sure that there was any curious. Buzzwire had a new director and nothing was like before.
BETH (voiceover): Lewis was a guy with no scruples or principles, the only thing that mattered for him was the number of visits to the site, the money and the power of the sponsors, professional ethics was something he had not even heard of. ‘It doesn’t matter what you can prove, it only mattered what you could sell’ that was his favorite line .... stupid.
At the back of the office, behind her table, was her friend Sam, sailing through the sea of virtual information data looking for what Beth had requested her.
B: “Hey! How's it going? Have you found out anything?”
S: "Yeah, I have found something". She said while she pounded the keyboard constantly looking at her computer screen. "But I don´t know if it will be useful for what you want. Look, It´s true that your boss had a sister, but she didn’t disappear like he told you. She´s dead. She was four years old when she disappeared, her small and broken body appeared a few days later on the outskirts of the city. The alleged kidnapper and murderer was never found. It seems there was no evidence and the case was forgotten.”
B: “Kidnapped? When was she kidnapped?”
S: "Let me see....September 1985...Twenty three years ago.”
At that moment Beth felt as if her blood had turned to ice. Maybe that would have been her fate if Mick had not saved her. Could he have anything to do with the death of this child? And ... If the little girl was killed, why was her photo sent to Talbot with that message? Help us and we will help you... Help? In exchange for what?

Far away
A young with a pale skin, almost snow-white, lay resting in a deep sleep. Beside her, a dark shadow veiled her dreams while a gloved hand gently caressed her delicate face. Then she began to open her eyes slowly. She had beautiful eyes with a deep blue gaze like the sea.
